Bionautit is a Finnish scientific co-operative venture specializing in providing research and consultancy for scientific projects, primarily in the fields of microbiology and biology.

Kari Steffen

Kari is a Docent (Associate Professor) of microbiology, specialized in microbial research. His particular field of expertise is fungal breakdown of hardwood lignin compounds and the resultant formation of toxic aromatic chemicals. He teaches laboratory courses and is involved in education and educational administration at every level. Kari is also a microbiology and biotechnology postgraduate program coordinator.

He uses his knowledge of microbiology in many different areas, including land remediation, microbial breakdown and historical wood preservation projects. He has also studied various microbiological related topics, for example Vrouw Maria related microbiological degradation. Kari was involved with the TEKES program, and, as a result, patented the microbiological cleaning methods used in the project. He also spent a year working internationally in laboratories in Spain, the Czech Republic and Germany.

Kari is a seasoned world traveler. He frequently visits Egypt and China, and is very active in the wider international scientific community. He enjoys multidisciplinary work and the process of coming up with innovative solutions for seemingly impossible microbiological problems. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Helsinki (Helsingin Yliopisto), where he has been teaching environmental and food microbiology for the past six years.
